The practical case
Your YouTube avatar appears next to comments, in search results, and beside your channel name at 24 to 48 pixels. It needs to be legible before it is impressive. A face that fills the frame, a clear expression, and two or three strong colors will survive the downsizing. Avoid text in the image: it rarely survives and it competes with the channel name.
3D cartoon and anime styles keep features simple, while realistic works if the lighting is flat and the background is uncluttered. Upload 1024×1024 so YouTube can use the largest version. If your channel has a visual identity, pick one accent color from your thumbnails and carry it into the background or clothing. The best test is a screenshot of a comment thread at 100% zoom — if you can tell it is you, the avatar is doing its job.
Prompt notes
These are specific to 3d cartoon. The same prompt in another style will produce something different.
Shrink the result before you commit. If the eyes and mouth disappear, simplify the scene and make the face larger in the frame.
Channel initials and taglines turn into unreadable marks next to comments. Let the face and one color do the identifying.
One skin tone, one clothing color, one background. More colors compete at small sizes and make the avatar look noisy.
Head and shoulders, not a full body. YouTube’s circular crop is tight; a distant subject reads as an empty circle.
If your thumbnails use a rust orange or a deep teal, put it in the avatar’s background or clothing. The channel starts to feel like one place.
