Why this style works
A realistic portrait needs specificity and restraint. This guide shows how to ask for both.

Using the style
Realistic avatars are a trust problem more than a rendering problem. The face has to look like a specific person, but not a real one; the light has to come from somewhere; the eyes have to have a catchlight. Describe age, hair, skin tone, expression and one piece of clothing, then add a light source. Keep the background shallow and quiet — a window, a wall, a bookcase out of focus.
Avoid “8K, hyperrealistic, masterpiece” padding; it tends to produce plastic skin. A natural expression beats a full smile at small sizes, and a slight asymmetry makes a face feel human. If you are using the avatar on a professional profile, keep the framing and lighting closer to a portrait than a movie still. And remember: our realistic style generates fictional people. Do not name a real person or ask us to reproduce someone’s likeness.
Prompt notes
These are specific to realistic. The same prompt in another style will produce something different.
Age range, hair, skin tone, expression. “A woman in her 30s with short black hair and a tired half-smile” is a face. “Beautiful woman” is a stock-photo average.
Warm window light from the left, soft overcast light, golden hour. Light direction creates shape and keeps the portrait from looking flat.
A tiny reflection in the eye is the difference between a portrait and a mask. “Natural catchlights” is a useful phrase.
A wall, a window, a blurred bookshelf. The background should say something about the person without competing with the face.
“8K, ultra-detailed, masterpiece” often adds shine and smooths skin. Say what you want to see instead: pores, stubble, a wool texture.
